Hyperdub mark 20 years of UK bassbin domination with proper perlers by Burial & Kode9 on a classic ‘Untrue’ tip with a recombinant hardcore footwork flex.
Hyperdub have captivated us ever since Kode9's momentous flip of Prince's 'Sign O The Times,' b/w a proto-dubstep template back in 2004. Some of this century’s most prized records followed, not least Burial’s definitive LP couplet, and contemporary classics by everyone from Cooly G to King Midas Sound, DJ Rashad to Laurel Halo.
With the double AA faced ‘Phoneglow / Eyes Go Blank’ label boss Steve Goodman (aka Kode9) and MVP Burial speak to decades of Janus-faced retro-futurism as they know best, shotting sides of bleary-eyed UKG and a Rufige Kru-gone-footwork tear out, in co-productions studded with their respective traits and classic grasp of the light/dark, romantic and techgnostic suss that makes UK rave renowned far beyond our borders.
On ‘Phoneglow’ they dice with 9 mins of ’Untrue’-calibre UKG, frosting 2-step drums with pitched and thizzed-up vox, FM synths and incidental crackle to hair-kissing appeal - the raved-up coda is just the icing on the cake. ‘Eyes Go Blank’ is where they get more mutant, knotting up a uchronic hardcore timeline where Rufige Kru sample Future in a 1993-2013-2023 style, and practically leave us gasping for more.
