Atmosphere return with Jestures, a bold and conceptually rich album that reflects on the quiet turbulence of middle age, domestic life, and creative evolution. Rather than romanticising past struggles, Slug turns his focus to the complexities of stability—parenthood, routine, memory—challenging the belief that art must be born from pain.
The duo’s fifth album of the 2020s unfolds across 26 tracks, each beginning with a different letter of the alphabet and sequenced accordingly. Guest spots follow suit: Evidence appears on ‘Effortless’, Kurious on ‘Kilowatts’, and Musab, Muja Messiah, and Mike the Martyr all feature on ‘Mash’. Despite its scope, many songs are concise—one or two verses—delivering distilled reflections with precision and flow.
Slug blends introspective lyricism with nods to classic Atmosphere motifs, while Ant’s production shifts from glitchy electronics to brooding drones and twangy grooves. The result is a cohesive, forward-facing work that captures emotional nuance and creative clarity without excess. Jestures is both personal inventory and subtle manifesto—rooted in change, grounded in craft.
