Lambchop - Punching the Clown (Frosted Clear Vinyl)

Nashville's beloved shapeshifting institution returns. Lambchop presents Punching The Clown, their seventeenth album, produced by Ryan Olson (Poliça, Gayngs) with songs written by principal Kurt Wagner and member Andrew Broder. The record was tracked over three days at April Base, the studio of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, who contributes banjo alongside a six part choir woven throughout.

The album began as a kind of ghost hunt. After hearing a song on the radio, a minimal single chord banjo strum paired with a small group of voices, Wagner went searching for it and came up empty. His pursuit led him to lined out singing, a form of acapella call and response gospel singing that originated in Scotland in the 1800s and became a root of American gospel and country music through Scottish immigrants who settled in Appalachia.

Formed in Nashville in the early 1990s, Lambchop has spent over three decades defying easy categorization, moving fluidly between alt country, soul, and experimental pop under Kurt Wagner's steady songwriting hand. Their sound blends warmth and restraint with a willingness to reinvent themselves record to record.
