Kali Malone returns with Burning Song, marking her first new album since 2024's All Life Long and showcasing an intuitive, direct compositional approach. Recorded at Leipzig's historic Thomaskirche—where J.S. Bach spent his final years—Malone becomes the first musician to perform contemporary works on the church's Bach Organ, a 2000 instrument with baroque-period tuning. Joined by Lucy Railton on cello and Stephen O'Malley on bowed acoustic guitar, the trio builds on their deep listening partnership from Does Spring Hide Its Joy, crafting slow, evolving passages that shift between ambiguity and radiance.
The album's first half, commissioned for the 2023 Venice Music Biennale, began as seeds developed on a backstage piano at Bozar in Brussels. The final three pieces were composed swiftly in the month leading up to the recording, capturing an urgent, spontaneous energy. Together, the trio moves through chord after chord, their interwoven tones rising like stones on a winding path—sometimes triumphant, other times hauntingly restrained.
