By 1972, Brazil was eight years into military rule, though Clube Da Esquina rarely wears that burden on its sleeve, which is precisely what makes it so remarkable. Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges gather the pastoral folk traditions of Minas Gerais, bossa nova, orchestral psychedelia and flashes of Beatles-esque pop that seems to exist on its own strange frequency, with Nascimento's unmistakable voice quietly stitching the whole thing together. The likes of 'Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser', 'Cais' and the deeply affecting 'San Vicente' drift seamlessly between joy and melancholy, intimacy and grandeur. Fifty-odd years on, the spell remains entirely unbroken.
