On their fifth album, The Go-Betweens welcomed multi-instrumentalist Amanda Brown, whose arrival widened the band’s sound and added a sharper sense of drama. It’s a key record in their catalogue, bridging the early years and the richer, more textured work that followed.
Paste named it among the best new-wave albums, highlighting songs by chief writers Grant McLennan and Robert Forster, including Right Here, Bye Bye Pride, House That Jack Kerouac Built and The Clarke Sisters.
These remastered Beggars Banquet albums are on vinyl individually for the first time in over 30 years, alongside CD editions. Remastered in 2019 for Domino’s G Stands For Go-Betweens Anthology, Volume 2, they capture the band’s London years: Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express (1986), Tallulah (1987) and the live set Fountains Of Youth. Songs for 16 Lovers Lane were written around this time.
