Camera Obscura mark 25 years of Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi with an expanded reissue on Merge Records, restoring their debut with the addition of the ‘Eighties Fan’ B-sides ‘Shine Like a New Pin’ and ‘Let’s Go Bowling’.
First released in 2001, the album arrived before the wider recognition that followed Underachievers Please Try Harder, yet already presents a fully formed vision. Produced in part by Stuart Murdoch, ‘Eighties Fan’ introduced a sound defined by tender melodies, gentle wit and finely detailed arrangements.
Across tracks like ‘Swimming Pool’, ‘Pen and Notebook’ and ‘Happy New Year’, Camera Obscura craft intimate, observational songwriting that leans on classic pop traditions while retaining a distinctly personal voice. Long sought-after in this form, Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi stands as a clear and enduring foundation for the band’s catalogue.
