The Folk Implosion’s 1999 release One Part Lullaby captures Lou Barlow and John Davis working in tandem, expanding the band’s lo-fi origins into something sleeker, stranger, and fully realized: intimate indie-pop wired with drum machines, samples, synths, shadowy guitars, and late-’90s electronic atmosphere. Although often framed through Barlow’s already-established profile, the album is equally a showcase for Davis’s essential role in the band’s writing, lyrics, arrangements, textures, and rhythmic feel. With producer Wally Gagel helping sharpen the record’s atmospheric edge and programming, One Part Lullaby moves like a nocturnal pop experiment—melodic, uneasy, and quietly adventurous. From the lift of “Free to Go” to the glitched mood of the title track and “E.Z. L.A.,” the album embodies the sound of musicians building a new world together.
